Stress Urinary Incontinence Treatment

IncontiLase® Medical Laser Treatment

What Is SUI (Stress Urinary Incontinence)?

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or light bladder leakage (LBL) is term used to describe leaking of a small amount of urine which usually occurs during coughing, sneezing, laughing or with physical activity such as running, jumping and lifting.

1 in 3 women who have had a baby wet themselves and 1 in 5 women suffer from poor bladder control.

Stress urinary incontinence can get worse after childbirth, with obesity, ageing and during menopause.

What Causes SUI (Stress Urinary incontinence)?

The cause of this involuntary loss of urine is the weakening of the pelvic floor structures supporting urethra (the tube that connects lower opening of the bladder to the urinary opening outside of the body) and weakness of the urethral closure mechanism.

What Are The Traditional Treatment Options?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is recommended as the initial treatment of stress urinary incontinence.

What Is IncontiLase® Laser Treatment?

IncontiLase® is an evidence-based non-ablative medical laser procedure for treatment of stress urinary incontinence. The laser has photo thermal heating effect on collagen in both vaginal walls and urethra. A special attachment, similar to a speculum used during pap smear is inserted into the vagina during which the entire vaginal region is treated by carefully warming vaginal walls with the thermal laser energy. The painless heating effect stimulates collagen contraction resulting in thickening, tightening, and strengthening of the vaginal walls and tissues that support the urethra.

Two to three treatment sessions, four weeks apart are recommended to achieve maximum effects.

The effects of the medical laser treatment will keep improving for six months after the procedure as the new collagen is produced. This is not a permanent treatment so yearly booster treatments are required to ensure longevity and effectiveness of the procedure.

The Process?

During your initial consultation Dr Mirjana Janjic will take your medical history, perform an assessment to evaluate if this treatment is likely to help you and answer any questions that you may have.

Your IncontiLase® medical laser procedure will be performed on the following visits. It will take approximately 45 to 60 minutes per session

You can leave immediately after the procedure and continue your daily routine. There maybe some minimal sensitivity after the treatment and a transparent discharge for 2 to 3 days afterwards. Excessive exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for 1 to 2 weeks. Sexual intercourse is not recommended for 1 week after the procedure.
